Bio Writing + Website Services

Emily studied creative writing at the University of Victoria’s Creative Writing Fine Arts program from 2007-2009 before moving to so-called “Vancouver” to study composition, arranging and jazz performance over a decade ago. For as long as she can remember, crafting concisely-articulated prose and poetry has been a vital aspect of her self-expression and a valuable tool to process her lived experience while connecting with others.

She has a love for writing that dates back to as early as she has been forming memories and it is a cherished collaborator of her musical brain. An avid observer, Emily has been enrolled full-time studying journalism, photography and videography to further hone her skills at Langara College and will be graduating this Spring (2022-2024).

The way that words, music and imagery/design can all be woven together in a tapestry to evoke feeling is an integral part of her work, as Emily has been immersing herself in the world of bio-writing, web design and self-promotion through her own artistic development. After recognizing the importance of these skills and with some years to get fluent in the structure of web design via Squarespace, learn some photography skills, along with the art of writing a compelling bio and press release, she is excited to open up services to other artists who wish to be conveyed in a way that breathes truth to their unique artistic identity while celebrating their creative work.

Emily Best (

long bio)

250-350 words

Emily Best (she/her) is an agender singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who resides in the occupied Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), Stó:lō and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) and xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) Nations of so-called Vancouver B.C. Her unique orchestration and arrangements paired with distinctive melodies weave a patchwork of pop, rock, and folk, while melding the idiosyncratic leanings of jazz with the familiar nostalgia of southern country-soul. Incorporating harp, pedal steel, jazz guitar, strings, horns, her debut album “A Storm Came Through” is described as a “marvellous musical medley that combines old-time Americana, contemporary jazz, avant-pop and orchestral folk. It’s unlike anything I’ve heard before.” Noted as having “the same appeal as cursive writing—elegant and rare” by The  Permanent Rain Press, Best’s “lush and soulful” composition and unique production style have classified her as “an artist who could be as comfortable on a folk festival stage as a jazz gig” by the The Vancouver Sun.

With formal education in jazz piano, classical voice and composition, as well as strong roots in rock and blues piano, her past collaborations include keyboards and supporting vocals with funk/soul band Queer as Funk, co-writing, piano for progressive jazz/rock ensemble Bad Tranzlator and Montréal-based progressive electro-soul singer-songwriter Janette King as well as keyboards/vocals with Sister Says (2022). In 2016, Emily toured as the keyboardist and backup vocalist for electro-soul indie band Soclose. The group gained national attention when they represented Montréal as CBC’s 2017 Canadian Top 25 Searchlight Winners. She also performed, toured throughout Canada and recorded as keyboard/backup vocalist for Janette King & The Bad’s Electric Magnolia cross-Canada tour from 2015-2017. Emily is also a collaborating keyboardist/vocalist with Nuu-chah-nulth folk singer-songwriter Candace Curr and has been playing with Haida/European sibling indie-pop outfit Sister Says this past year. Emily currently resides in so-called “Vancouver” BC where she works as a performing musician, composer, arranger, and recording artist.
